# Where to take used injection pens and needles Canonical: https://penzilla.co.uk/dispose-injection-pens-and-sharps/ Description: Find the right disposal route for used pen needles, finished injection pens and unwanted medicine. What to ask your pharmacy and local collection service. Arrange a sharps bin and a collection or return service before you need them. The route depends on where you live and what you are disposing of. A pharmacy accepting unwanted medicine may have separate rules for used needles. General information for a conversation with your healthcare team. ## Start with the item in front of you Separate the disposal questions before contacting a service. Item | Next check | Used pen needle or another sharp | Use the sharps container provided or recommended for your treatment. Confirm where the sealed container goes. | Finished injection pen | Read the disposal instructions for the exact device and ask the dispensing pharmacy which route applies. | Unused or expired medicine | Ask a pharmacy about returning unwanted medicine, explaining if the item includes a needle. | Outer cardboard packaging | Follow local recycling rules and remove personal prescription labels before disposal. | ## Find a local service In England and Wales, use the [GOV.UK clinical waste collection finder](https://www.gov.uk/request-clinical-waste-collection) with your postcode. Some councils collect household clinical waste, and charges may apply. The finder does not cover Scotland or Northern Ireland. In those nations, ask your dispensing pharmacy or local health service who handles household sharps in your area. Ask the pharmacy which supplied the injections whether a sharps container is included and whether they arrange returns or collections. Confirm acceptance before taking a full container to a counter or GP surgery. Do not send used needles through the post unless the provider has explicitly supplied and explained an approved return service. ## Questions for the collection service - Do you accept household sharps from privately prescribed injections? - Which type and size of container do you accept? - Do I need a referral, registration or collection booking? - Is collection charged, and who supplies the replacement bin? - How should I seal and label the bin, and where should I leave the container on collection day? The answers are local. Milton Keynes City Council, for example, describes a household clinical waste collection service but says the council does not supply replacement sharps bins. Do not assume a different council operates the same scheme. ## While a container is in use Follow the container's instructions, including its fill line and closure mechanism. Keep the container out of children's reach. Used sharps belong in the proper container after use, never loose in a household rubbish or recycling bin. The Health and Safety Executive advises immediate disposal in a sharps container after an activity involving needles. Follow the pen's own instructions for safe needle removal. Do not dismantle a device or reach into a sharps bin to recover an item. Book the next collection or obtain a replacement before the container reaches its permitted fill level. ## A pen with medicine left inside A pen reaching the end of its permitted use period may still contain liquid. The UK Mounjaro KwikPen leaflet says to discard after four weekly doses and no later than 30 days after first use, even when medicine remains. Ask the pharmacy how to dispose of the pen and any unused medicine. Do not drain the contents into a sink or try to extract a further dose. If you are going away, settle both storage and disposal before departure. The [travel checklist](https://penzilla.co.uk/travelling-with-weight-loss-injections/) has prompts for this conversation.
