# Travelling with prescribed weight loss injections Canonical: https://penzilla.co.uk/travelling-with-weight-loss-injections/ Description: Plan a trip with prescribed injection pens: airport documents, destination rules, storage questions and a packing checklist for your pharmacist. Check the trip with your pharmacist before packing a pen. Airport security, medicine import rules and storage are separate checks. Permission to take a pen on a flight does not answer all three. Published by [Penzilla Editorial Team](https://penzilla.co.uk/about/). Sources checked 23 October 2026. General information for a conversation with your healthcare team. ## Before booking or ordering a supply Write down your travel dates, destination, connecting airports and the exact name and type of pen. Take the list to the pharmacy supplying your prescription. Ask whether the supply covers the trip and what to do if travel disrupts treatment. A time zone change or a delayed flight is a reason to ask for a plan, not to improvise a dose. Check the destination country's rules through its embassy or high commission. Include any country where you enter through border control during a connection. A UK prescription does not settle another country's import rules. GOV.UK's [airport rights guidance](https://www.gov.uk/airport-rights) points travellers towards these checks. ## What UK airport security allows The [UK hand luggage rules](https://www.gov.uk/hand-luggage-restrictions/essential-medicines-and-medical-equipment) allow essential medicines, hypodermic syringes and cooling gel packs in hand luggage. Ice packs need a check with the airport. Medical equipment may be screened separately. For liquid medicine in a container larger than 100ml, carry proof of the prescription, such as a prescription copy or doctor's letter. The same page says proof is not required for tablets or liquid containers of 100ml or less. Separate government guidance asks for a doctor's letter for medical equipment such as needles. Carry the labelled packaging and documents, and confirm requirements with your airline and each departure airport, including the return flight. ## Build a storage plan for the whole trip Ask your pharmacist which storage rules apply before first use and after first use for your exact pen. Include time in taxis, queues and the hotel, as well as the flight. Ask how to pack cooling materials and how to recognise a storage problem. The UK Mounjaro KwikPen leaflet, for example, says to refrigerate at 2°C to 8°C before use, never freeze, and discard a pen which has frozen. After first use the allowance is up to 30 days unrefrigerated at no more than 30°C. These instructions belong to this product. Do not apply them to a different pen or a different country's version. The leaflet supplied in your pack is the starting point. ## Pack after the checks are complete - Labelled medicine and the leaflet, plus the documents agreed with your airline. - Enough compatible supplies for the prescribed treatment, with a plan agreed for delays. - A suitable sharps container and a confirmed disposal option at the destination. - The pharmacy contact details, accessible without an internet connection. - The agreed storage instructions and the date a pen was first used. ## If a bag is delayed or a pen gets too hot Contact the supplying pharmacist with the product name, whether the pen has been used, and the temperature and time involved if known. Appearance alone cannot confirm a medicine remains usable. Ask for advice before using a pen whose storage history is uncertain. Keep the packaging and travel details available for the conversation. Arrange [safe disposal of pens and needles](https://penzilla.co.uk/dispose-injection-pens-and-sharps/) as part of the trip. If you need a replacement supplier, [check the pharmacy registration](https://penzilla.co.uk/check-online-pharmacy/) before sharing prescription details. ## Sources - [GOV.UK, Medicines and medical equipment in hand luggage](https://www.gov.uk/hand-luggage-restrictions/essential-medicines-and-medical-equipment) - [GOV.UK, Your rights at the airport](https://www.gov.uk/airport-rights) - [Civil Aviation Authority, Travelling with medicines and medical equipment](https://www.caa.co.uk/air-passengers/about-your-trip/health-and-medical/travelling-with-medicines-mobility-and-medical-equipment/) - [Eli Lilly, UK Mounjaro KwikPen patient leaflet](https://www.medicines.org.uk/emc/files/pil.15484.pdf)
